Purr-fect Predators: Lessons from the Feline Fossil Record

Cats are some of the fiercest predators alive today, but their extinct relatives would have been even more impressive. From the giant American lion to the sabre-toothed cat with its ferocious teeth, join scientist Ashley Reynolds for an examination of the past, present, and future of one of humanity’s favourite creatures. Looking through the lens of the fossil record, learn all about the feline family tree and what extinct species can tell us about the perils facing today’s big and small cats. This half day workshop explores the connections between cat evolution and the species we know and love today. Program includes admission to the Wild Cats exhibition.

Ashley Reynolds

Ashley Reynolds is a postdoctoral fellow at the Canadian Museum of Nature and the University of Ottawa. Her research focuses on how extinct mammals have responded to past environmental change, and the use of palaeontological data to help plan for future changes. Her PhD thesis focused on the life cycle and behaviours of the sabre-toothed cat Smilodon fatalis.
